The long road of the NBA season is never easy. There are always obstacles to overcome, always challenges to face. But for a lot of NBA fans out there, the road for this newly built Warriors team seems to be a lot less daunting. How could anybody beat a 73 win team who just added, arguably, the second best player in the league? Who could possibly pose a threat to a team as talented as Golden State? Hold off on giving the bay area another trophy. It is not over yet.
You see, there is a team who can give Steph team a run for their money. There is a team who might be just talented enough, and just brilliant enough to make this season more than just a one team show. There is, definitely, a team that can pose a huge threat to the Warriors and the rest of the championship hopefuls in the NBA. The San Antonio Spurs.
Yes, they’re old. Absolutely, they’re boring. Sure, they’re slow. But the Spurs are a once in a generation type of team. They always seem to have an answer, no matter who’s in front of them. This could be the last year of their LONG reign of contention, but can they come together one last time to win big when NOBODY expects them to? You bet.
And it all starts with some key players. The Warriors have the best backcourt in the league. Everyone in their right mind can agree to that. But the Spurs have a pretty lethal duo too, and they could come to haunt the so-called “super-team” over there in oracle.
Kawhi Leonard and LaMarcus Aldridge form a one-two punch that creates a perfect balance of offense and defense. Kawhi (obviously) is the leader on defense and is the anchor of the team’s ability to stop the ball and slow down the pace of the game. Aldridge, on the other hand, makes up more of the offense part and is the clear go-to guy in the post. He can really do it all, proving last year that he can even hit the three ball at a consistent rate. Together, Kawhi and LaMarcus are the backbones of the Spurs, and they could really wreck some havoc for their opposition.
What makes the Spurs truly formidable, though, is the way they play the game. That’s right, the Spurs are the true model for how basketball should be played. If you don’t believe me, just watch some highlights of any Spurs game within the last ten years, and you’ll see what I’m talking about. Whether that’s the mind of Pop at work or just the tradition and makeup of the Spurs players themselves, this team knows how to run an efficient system. The offense is built off of selfless passing and focuses on getting the BEST shots possible. Movement off the ball and keeping the defense guessing are also important to keep the offense fresh and nonrepetitive. While it sounds easy in theory, it never seems to work out the same when another team tries to replicate the system. The roster just simply seems to be made for this type of selfless play, and that’s something not even the Warriors have perfected.
Great talent mixed with greats minds creates a recipe for success. And while a 70 win record is surely not guaranteed for this team, I wouldn’t count them out just yet. No other franchise in the league has created anything like this before. While Spurs may not be the fastest, youngest, or most athletic team in the league, but at this point, they look ready for something big. They look ready to prove themselves yet again to the world ready to crown the Warriors as unbeatable.
Let’s give these old, boring, Spurs a chance. They might just do the impossible.
