Fadeaway World

We all remember the Seattle Supersonics with a lot of love as one of the most iconic franchises of the past couple of decades, and we definitely miss the green and white jerseys in the Association, considering they have one of the biggest fanbases in the NBA.

Still, as the NBA expansion is out of the question – at least for the time being – it’s going to be a long long time before we see an NBA team heading towards Seattle once again, and that’s definitely something all NBA fans should regret.

And, for those younger fans who don’t remember guys like Gary Payton, Detlef Schrempf or Shawn Kemp, all we can recommend to you is that you jump right away into Youtube and search those dominant Sonics teams.

Today, we’re going to imagine the Sonics never left, and consider all those players that we believe should be dressing on green and white to try and lead them to another NBA Championship. Let’s go.

10. Boris Diaw

Diaw would be one of the veteran presences in the roster, with his nice ability to read the game, find the open guy and even put the ball on the floor to shoot from distance, being a very interesting and cheap asset for the Seattle squad to try and mentor the young talents they’d have.

Just like Diaw, the former Laker would pretty much never see actual playing time, but he could be a strong veteran presence to mentor the youngsters, and his reliable shot from deep could come handy when they’re either throwing the white flag and let the bottom of the bench try and make a comeback.

This guy has one of the most interesting NBA stories, and he’s managed to become a key piece in Gregg Popovich’s rotation due to his defensive determination and explosiveness, showing vast athleticism to attack the rim and dunk the ball at ease, something Seattle fans have always cherished.

7. Thon Maker

This athletic freak and polemic player is definitely a top – notch prospect and he’s definitely a future All-Star considering his skill set and gifted physique, although he’s still pretty much a work in progress who could thrive while developing in Seattle as their second big man off the bench until he finally takes over the starting spot.

6. Gerald Green

Also, an athletic standout could be a thrill to the fans as their sixth man, knocking everybody off their feet with his explosive dunks that can definitely make Seattle fans show why they were probably the loudest crowd in the Association.

5. Jeff Green

Green was actually a member of the Sonics in the deal that sent Ray Allen to the Boston Celtics, staying with the organization for 4 full seasons before heading back to Boston. Being a streaky shooter, he could definitely be a lot of help for this team in those games their stars seem to be having an off day.

4. Serge Ibaka

Ibaka’s not the same player he once was and his defensive presence in the post has really diminished, although he’s flourished as a very complete offensive player. Still, going back to his former role, he could be the rim protector they need to contend in the wild Western Conference, being freed of offensive duties.

3. James Harden

Harden blossomed as a Sixth man when he was part of this organisation, and now that’s he’s become arguably a top 5 player in the league, he’d definitely be a guy the Sonics would want to keep at any cost, considering his ability to pull up from everywhere and set his teammates up with great ease.

2. Kevin Durant

Durant spent his entire career with the Sonics / Thunder before “getting tired of being number 2”. Well, just to prove a point, he’s going to be number 2 again, as we value loyalty here. Still, Durant’s the best offensive player in the world right now while also being a very underrated defender, so you’d definitely want him near his hometown.

And last but not least, we got the reigning MVP, the human triple double, the man himself: Brodie. Westbrook is one of the best players in the league with his phrenetic pace and his athleticism, and having a supporting cast like this one at this stage of his career would definitely take his game to another level, leading the Sonics to the ring against every opposition.
