Clint Capela has quietly, yet clearly emerged as one of the league’s most gifted centers and rim protectors, now even becoming a huge offensive factor with both James Harden and Chris Paul throwing lobs at him.
Posting season averages of 13.9 points, 10.8 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game on a league-leading 65% from the floor, the young man out of Switzerland was even able to lockdown Defensive Player of the Year frontrunner Rudy Gobert during the 2nd round of the playoffs, proving that he’s the real deal.
Capela is a top-notch defender below the rim and has shown great strides of improvement guarding all the way to the perimeter, is an elite roll man and has even improved his free throw shooting a lot, and he’s looking like a lock to ink his signature on a max contract during the offseason.
Today, we’re going to let you know about the 4 teams that could offer him that well deserved max contract.
4. Dallas Mavericks
The Dallas Mavericks have been looking for a reliable big man for some time now, striking out on DeAndre Jordan after the Clippers fiasco and then being disappointed by Nerlens Noel, so you know a starting defensive-minded center is one of Mark Cuban’s priorities going forward.
They have the kind of cap space to offer Capela a lot of cash, not to mention the fact that they’re also going to have a top 5 pick in this year’s draft to join Dennis Smith Jr, Seth Curry, Harrison Barnes and Dirk Nowitzki as well.
3. Atlanta Hawks
The Atlanta Hawks are on the verge of rebuilding so naturally, they need this kind of top-tier young talents in order to leapfrog past their opposition, and they’ve been also looking for a rim protector for a couple of years now in Dwight Howard and then Dedmon, but neither of them is franchise cornerstones.
The Hawks already drafted Collins and he’s looking like a stud in the making, and even though a Capela-Collins frontcourt could represent some spacing problems, they have the kind of upside worth the try. Also, they’re going to have a very high pick to join Dennis Schroder and Kent Bazemore as well.
2. Phoenix Suns
The Phoenix Suns have already stated that they intend to offer him a max deal, as they desperately crave as much help on the defensive end as they can find after being one of the most disastrous defenses in the NBA for at least 4 years in a row, something neither Alex Len nor Tyson Chandler could do.
Capela would be the team’s defensive anchor and would be deadly in the pick and roll next to Elfrid Payton, as well as opening up a lot of space for Devin Booker’s shooting and Josh Jackson’s drives.
1. Chicago Bulls
That Chicago Bulls rebuilding project is already looking great after they showed what they were capable of when healthy. The Kris Dunn, Zach LaVine, Lauri Markkanen trio looks like an extremely talented core going forward, while Bobby Portis and Denzel Valentine also took major steps forward as reliable role players this season.
Chicago’s also set to have a high Draft pick during the summer and they were reportedly considering taking Mo Bamba to make up for Lopez and Felicio’s lack of interior presence and rim protection, but they’re very likely to try and pursue Capela should they miss Bamba in the Draft, and this team would instantly become a contender in the East for years to come.
