The trade between the San Antonio Spurs and the Toronto Raptors has been one of the most memorable moves of this off season. The Spurs exchanged disgruntled star Kawhi Leonard to the Raptors for DeMar DeRozan and everyone has had an opinion on the trade.
San Antonio’s Rudy Gay is no different, loyalty is very important to DeRozan so Gay believes that the Spurs is the perfect place for him.
During a UConn Insider podcast, Rudy Gay said the difference between the Raptors and the Spurs was like ‘night and day’ and that San Antonio will always do everything they can to keep their players satisfied.
“The best part about San Antonio, they do right by you,” Gay said. “They do right by their players, do right by their staff. That doesn’t happen much in the NBA, to be honest with you. It doesn’t happen much. On one side, there was [Leonard] that was trying to get out, get to a bigger market, and they were totally being upfront with him, and then they trade him for a guy [DeRozan] where, that organization wasn’t being up front with him at all. So, I mean, it’s just night and day. That trade right there shows you the difference between the San Antonio Spurs and other organizations.”
Rudy Gay was traded from the Raptors during the middle of the season in 2013 which helps him understand the situation that DeRozan has found himself in. DeRozan has played his entire career up until now in Toronto so it’s easy to see why he may feel a little hurt or betray by the way this all went down.
The new look San Antonio team will be looking to return to championship contention after a somewhat disappointing 2017-2018 season. The Spurs made the playoffs this year but finishing with just 47 wins in the regular season, it was their least number of wins in a season since 1999.
