Luka Doncic is a special player. We all knew he was going to be good, but I think it’s fair to say that nobody pictured he would be this good in just his rookie year. Luka is playing very solid by anyone’s standards and is at the top of most people’s list when talking about who the rookie of the year might be. He is playing at a constant high level.

It’s why Luka Doncic is the NBA’s next big thing.

His averages are currently 18 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 4.4 assists a game. He is scoring the most points out of any first-year player so far and is shooting 42% on the year, which is respectable for a rookie, especially a guard. Luka is also shooting above the league average from beyond the arc, with a solid 36.9% from deep. What might be most impressive about this kid is just how much of an impact he has made on the Mavericks this season.

The Mavs are a team that no one expected to have even a decent year, let alone being in the playoff. While we are at an early stage in the year, the team has done nothing but improve. They started out playing subpar (at the level most people expected them to play at), but weren’t near the level they have been playing at here as of late. They have a top 10 record in the league, and have done nothing but improve. Not to mention that they are doing this mostly without Dirk. And while he hasn’t been in his prime for a few years, he’s most certainly the leader of the squad. The fact that they are doing all of this without him is pretty remarkable.

Luka has stepped up and is taking the bull by the horns, and this team has been playing at a very high level because of him. He has stepped up when it counts the most. His clutch play as of late has been amazing. Based on his maturity and basketball IQ, which are incredibly high, it’s clear that this kid is going to be something special.

Additionally, he boasts one of the best 4th quarter field goal percentages in the league, a mark that’s almost unheard of for a rookie. No doubt, he is showing out and making the doubters eat their words all while being one of the youngest players in the league.

While Luka is what looks to be to the gem of this draft class, it was not something we expected, or at least not at this point in his career. He had a lot of question marks coming in from overseas and he was even traded for Trae Young at the beginning of the draft. That has looked to be a crucial mistake, as he has been outplaying Young by tremendous proportions up to this point in the year, and has without a doubt exceeded expectations by a mile.

Best of all, the guy is only going to get better from here. It’s been a rough time for the Mavs lately, but it looks like they have finally found some hope for the future.
