Right now the NBA has the highest average salary out of all the major sports leagues in the world. That includes the NFL, NHL, MLB, Premier League, and La Liga. If you want to make money go play professional basketball. Some of the contracts that are being out right now are just ridiculous. There are currently 135 players earning over $10 million a year, 46 earning over $20 million and 11 earning over $30 million.
These huge contracts are thanks to the huge increase in the salary cap in 2016. The salary cap is determined on the projected basketball-related income of that year. The NBA recently signed a huge new TV rights deal which massively increased the income which in turn increased the size of contracts players can sign.
All this bodes well for all the young players in the league as well as the current batch of players expected to make the 2019 NBA draft. Out of this batch of players, 1 is expected to go right to the very top of the NBA. Zion Williamson is currently projected to be the 1st overall pick the NBA. He’s currently averaging 20.4 points, 8 rebounds, 2.1 steals and 2 blocks through 10 games and he’s shooting 66.1% from the field as well. He is a once in a generation athlete who jumps out of the gym even though there’s only 1 player in the NBA who’s heavier than him, Boban Marjanovic.
According to Forbes:
“Zion Williamson’s going to make $1 billion playing basketball effortlessly,” longtime ESPN college basketball analyst Fran Fraschilla told Forbes SportsMoney on Friday.
“The combination of his personality, unique physical ability, his basketball ability, the fact that he’s already built himself a brand and the fact that he’s at Duke and is going to be on TV every single game this season, it just adds up. You don’t have to be a marketing genius to realize that this kid is going to make a lot of money off the court.”
The 6-foot-7, 285-pound Williamson is a unique player who has already amassed two million Instagram followers and more than 170,000 Twitter followers. He is averaging 20.7 points and 9.5 rebounds while shooting 65 percent from the field. His highlight-reel dunks are being showcased on ESPN on a regular basis and he has already drawn comparisons to James, Charles Barkley and other stars.
When Zion declares for the NBA draft, due to his already impressive image, companies will be lining up to get him to represent them. If Zion goes 1st overall in the draft then his salary straight away will be around $8 million. If he only signs max deals till he retires and he retires when he’s around 35 then he could be earning $40 million a year plus for 11+ years. He could earn around $500 million in career earnings just from salaries alone.
Then there’s sponsorship. Zion will probably be represented by Nike. Nike pays its athletes well as shown by LeBron’s billion dollar deal with them. If Zion is a good as advertised then he could ink a similar deal like LeBron’s. This is serious money.
All this is within Zion’s grasp if everything goes according to plan. Whether or not that happens is up to him. If you’re reading this Zion please, for the love of God, stay healthy, stay humble, stay patient. One mistake could cost you all this so please don’t mess it up.
