Right now we have several teams in the West that could end the season as the top seed. Golden State, OKC, and the Denver Nuggets look like the franchises that can sustain their high level of success through to next year. On Friday last week, OKC were in Denver for a matchup which the Nuggets won 109-98. This was a contest between 2 great teams with a lot at stake, so you can imagine it was very competitive out there.

In these matchups, players’ emotion can spill over into the game and we had a case of that on Friday. In the 3rd quarter of the game, Nikola Jokic was at the free-throw line having been fouled by Steven Adams. As Jokic was getting ready to take the free-throw a Nuggets fan sitting behind the stanchion starting jawing at Steven Adams. He was wearing a Jamal Murray Jersey and was standing up and taunting Adams to try and get under his skin.

Adams responded in kind by calling the fan a number of expletives and saying “meet me out there”. Steven Adams is one of the toughest and strongest guys in the NBA and the last person you want to get into a fight with. The Nuggets fan was obviously way out of his depth and was doing it for attention. Adams could have used it to psyche himself up to play better. He did finish the game with 26 points and 14 rebounds including 11 offensive boards.

Playing on the road brings many challenges; flying over a huge country, time zone differences, a lack of sleep and opposing fans make it a difficult experience. Annoying fans are just part of the journey. Usually, players ignore them but occasionally there are some scraps. Let’s just hope we don’t anything like the Malice in the Palace anytime soon, or at all.
