Right now the Philadelphia 76ers are in a prime position to make a great run in this season’s Playoffs. They are currently 4th in the East Standings and have the talent to at least make it to the Conference Finals. Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons should be All-Stars and Jimmy Butler could be one as well.
However, the 76ers do have some issues with floor-spacing since we all know just how bad Simmons is from the perimeter. This season only 8% of his shots are from beyond 10 feet and he hasn’t even attempted a 3 pointer yet. Simmons inability to hit from the outside means that defenders can sag off him and pay more attention to the likes of Joel Embiid, Jimmy Butler and JJ Redick. This will diminish their effectiveness and could seriously harm Phili’s chances of contending for a title going forward.
Even though his outside shooting is extremely lackluster trading Simmons would just be an insane proposition. Simmons is a unicorn; there’s never been a player like him in NBA history. He’s a 6 foot 10 point guard with great handles and amazing court vision. He reminds everyone around him of Magic Johnson and has the numbers to back that up.
With that said, the idea of trading Ben Simmons right now is absolutely unreal.

During Magic’s 1st 2 years in the league, he averaged 19.8 points, 8 assists, and 8.1 rebounds a game on 53.1% from the floor. In Simmons’ 1st 2 years in the NBA, he’s averaged 15.9 points, 8.1 assists and 8.5 rebounds on 55.5% from the floor. Simmons will only get better as he gets older and if he can add a simple mid-range shot and maybe hit a few 3s occasionally then not only will he improve but everyone around him will as well. We saw this with LeBron in his career as he started out being a very small threat from the perimeter. LeBron worked and worked on his outside game and went from a 31.5% shooter from 3 in 2008 to 40.6% in 2013.
Simmons has time on his side but if he wants to be a top 10 player in the league and contend seriously for a title then he needs to hire a shooting coach and just put the hours in.
