Liverpool FC is one of Europe’s biggest sensations right now, as Jurgen Klopp’s heavy metal has really turned around a team no one took seriously as a contender a couple of years ago.
Klopp’s fast-paced offense and high pressure have made Liverpool a huge threat to win both the Champions League and the Premier League, featuring one of the deadliest attacking fronts we’ve seen in ages.
Moreover, top-tier players actually want to come to Liverpool for a change, following a tough stretch where they mightily struggled to complete big-name signings with Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United all ahead of them.
Even so, and regardless of the fact that this team is truly stacked (especially up front), lack of depth has always been a huge concern at Anfield. But, who could they sign that could actually make this team better? Let’s take a look at some options.
5. Steven Bergwijn
Liverpool is the latest team to be linked with the PSV wonderkid. He’s a 21-year-old winger that’s also on Manchester United’s radar because of his ability to find gaps in defenses, create chances and beat full-backs with his speed.
Bergwijn is a perfect fit for Liverpool, as he can play in both flanks of the attacking front, but can also take a step back and play as an attacking midfielder. That kind of versatility is exactly what Klopp is looking for.
4. Sandro Tonali
Sandro Tonali is already drawing a lot of attention at Italy while playing for Serie B Brescia as he looks to find his way to a European giant while drawing comparisons with former legend Andrea Pirlo.
Tonali has a smooth feel for the game, can control the pace and dictate tempo. He’s great at set pieces, and could even play as a defensive midfielder if needed. Liverpool could face a lot of competition for the 18-year-old, though.
3. Nicolas Acevedo
Nicolas Acevedo actually plays for Liverpool. Not the Reds, but Uruguayan side also called Liverpool. Coincidences aside, he’s the kind of defensive talent Klopp’s side needs, as the defense is their lone concern so far.
Acevedo can either play on the center of the pitch or as a full back, and he’s showing that versatility with Uruguay’s U-20 squad as of late. It’s early on his career, but he’s drawn comparisons with Diego Godin.
2. Nabil Fekir
Fekir is well aware of Liverpool’s interest in acquiring his services and he was reportedly very close to completing a move to join the Merseyside squad at the start of the season, but his asking price was really high.
Either way, Fekir has already outgrown Ligue 1 and is ready for another challenge. He’s great at take-on, is a great playmaker and could really help this team off the bench with Adam Lallana struggling to find his rhythm.
1. Timo Werner
The German standout is also on Real Madrid’s radar, but Klopp keeps high on luring him out of RB Leipzig. The 22-year-old is coming off a breakout season and would be a perfect addition for the Reds should they lose Mane, Salah or Firmino.
Otherwise, it would be kind of hard to picture an XI where Klopp could feature all 4 of them, but if anyone could pull it off, that’s him. Werner reminds of a young Miroslav Klose, and he’d thrive under Liverpool’s heavy metal offense.
