With Anthony Davis’ trade request being made public earlier this month, it makes sense for the Pelicans to shut him down the rest of the season.

It helps preserve him for his next team and makes sure he doesn’t hurt his own trade value. We’ve seen this before, too, with guys like Carmelo Anthony and J.R. Smith being virtually exiled from their respective teams.

But the practice isn’t actually technically allowed. And while the NBA denied a previous report that they’d be fining the Pelicans $100,00 for every game they intentionally sat Anthony Davis, it could still result in some kind of penalty.

While it seems the NBA has to work on consistency, this regulation ensures that players who really want to play are given the opportunity and aren’t just sat out for no reason.

We’ll see what else transpires in this ongoing Anthony Davis saga, but as his time in New Orleans draws to a close, things only appear to be getting bumpier.
