In the midst of all the end-season action, Anthony Davis has become a bit of a forgotten story in it all. After a rather dramatic week of rumors and reports, it ended abruptly that Thursday afternoon with him still wearing a Pelicans jersey. The reason why is directly connected to the Celtics, who stand as the team with the most assets to acquire him.
The Lakers went crazy in their offer, giving up basically half the team for one guy. Still, the Pels were dead set on what the Celtics have to offer this upcoming summer. And, because Boston can’t trade for Davis until after the season, New Orleans elected to wait.
In other words, the Celtics are almost guaranteed Davis… so long as they let the Pels have their pick of the crop. In a report by Shams Charania of The Athletic, that’s exactly what the Celtics intend to do. They apparently told New Orleans that, if they wait, “everyone can be available” when they discuss an Anthony Davis trade this offseason.
Jayson Tatum has been thrust into the spotlight for these Celtics, both in terms of on-the-court expectations now and a potentially uncertain roster this summer. The Celtics are playing to win it all — but they are also focusing on winning in June and July, too. Around the NBA’s Feb. 7th trade deadline, Boston made their intentions clear to the New Orleans Pelicans surrounding their pursuit of All-NBA star Anthony Davis after the season, league sources told The Athletic: Everyone can be available.
This all but ensures that Boston will be the favorites when A.D. talks resume this summer.
Unless the Knicks or Lakers step in with something out of this world, we shouldn’t hold our breaths on that changing.
