From everything we have been lead to believe, Luke Walton’s future with the Lakers ends this summer after a disappointing 2018/19 campaign.
Still, the opportunities will not end there for Walton, with a number of teams expected to pursue his services. Most notably, the Phoenix Suns, who are looking for a guy to lead their young core into stardom. Of course, they would have to make some moves of their own first before it would become a possibility.
“He wants to stay in the game,” one league source told Sean Deveney of Sporting News. “For most front offices, I think you look at what he did in Golden State, what he did in LA before LeBron came, and you have to say he has a good, solid resume developing players, dealing with stars.”
“Have to think Phoenix would jump on him, if everything falls into place, but he might get a better offer.”
If the Lakers fire Walton and Phoenix lets go of their current coach Igor Kokoskov, expect them to heavily pursue Walton for his reputation of developing young players.
Deveney also listed the Cavaliers as a potential destination, another rebuilding team in need of some new direction.
Either way, we are not seeing the last of Luke Walton any time soon. Whether it is the Suns or Cleveland, or somewhere else, he is destined to take the coaching reigns somewhere. The only thing we know is that it will not be in Los Angeles.
