Lonzo Ball posted a cryptic post to Instagram yesterday, hinting that the Laker star might be on his way to joining Nike. Considering the drama surrounding Big Baller Brand, and the rough season by Ball, it should come as no surprise he is looking for a change.
In a recent chat with the L.A. Times, long time Nike endorser LeBron James expressed his pride in Lonzo for taking control.
“Whatever the kid decides to do, whatever brand he comes with next — if it’s with Nike obviously we would welcome him,” James told The Times. “I would definitely welcome him. I love the kid regardless of what shoes he had on. But we shall see.”
“I love the fact that he’s taking control of his [stuff],” James said. “I mean, he’s, that’s what’s really, really dope to me. Once I saw that story I just seen a kid turning into a man. ‘This is my career and I’m taking this. I done had enough with — whatever. I done had enough. Whatever. If I’m not going to be successful, I’m not going to be successful on my terms.’ I saw a lot of that. We’ll see.”
Lonzo has been under the influence of his father, his family brand, and the media, all of whom have tried to mold and direct Ball’s career. With his decision to leave BBB for Nike, he seems to be putting himself in the driver’s seat.
Will this newfound mentality materialize on the court? It is too early to tell, but if he does, he might just develop into the player the Lakers have needed him to be since being drafted in 2017.
