It has been years since The Mamba has called it a career. When he left, he basically disappeared from the basketball world, choosing to invest his time in business and with his family.
Lately, though, Kobe has made a number of appearances on the media, causing a lot of stir with his comments. His latest quote may be the most controversial one yet.
While playing “Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts” on The Late Late Show with James Corden Tuesday, the future NBA Hall of Famer was asked to give his opinion on where he, LeBron, and Jordan rank among the greatest player ever.
“You know what I’m going to answer, but I’m not going to answer it, ‘cause everybody is gonna sit there and debate about it,” Kobe said. “So I’m just going to take a bite of this.”
His attempt to avoid the question failed, as he eventually gave in with an epic response.
“Okay fine,” he said. “I’m the best, Michael is second-best, LeBron is third-best.”
There are not many who would rank Kobe above both LeBron and MJ. Most would point out Kobe’s low efficiency and his “selfish” play as evidence for that point. Still, Kobe was very much solid on both ends of the floor, and could not be stopped offensively. He had that mentality, he had the clutch “gene,” and he has all the accolades. Plus, a few years ago, Jordan ranked Kobe above James in the all-time ranks.
It is unlikely that the debate will cool off any time soon, especially with the damaging season LeBron James just had. But if you ask The Mamba, he will tell you the argument is already settled.
