It is just not worth it anymore. To risk injury, and add mileage to an aging body for a lost season just does not make much sense, especially for a franchise looking to redeem themselves next season.
That is what Luke Walton and the medical staff told LeBron James when they convinced him to ride the pine for the remaining 6 games of the 2018/19 season.
“My understanding from the medical staff, they finally said, ‘Look, it’s just not worth it anymore. Let’s make sure you have a healthy summer.’ So that’s the decision that was made, and we’ll move forward without him on the floor for the final six,” Walton said to ESPN.
It has been a disappointing season for LeBron and the Lakers. His eye-rolling, finger-pointing behavior towards his teammates created a rift in the Laker locker room since he returned from his Christmas Day groin injury. Coupled with multiple other injury issues to key players, the Anthony Davis trade rumors, and a lack of depth on the roster doomed the team way before they were officially eliminated from playoff contention.
The best they can do now is look towards the future. Multiple star free agents promise to make this a big summer for Magic, but they can only go as far as LeBron takes them. In other words, they will need healthy to maximize their Championship dreams. Clearly, they are not willing to risk anything for what is left of this nightmarish campaign.
