When looking at the Los Angeles Lakers the last couple of seasons on and off the court, the best way to describe it, is to call it a mess.

After the 2017-2018 season, the Lakers decided to make some big moves by bringing in four-time MVP LeBron James and clearing out players such as Jordan Clarkson and Larry Nance Jr in a trade with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

From an outside point of view, there was no harm done with moving on with these players but Larry Nance certainly saw it differently, he saw it as a sign of betrayal.

In a deeper look at the Lakers failures this year on The Athletic, there is a very well documented story about the moments leading up to the Nance Jr trade that would certainly anger many.

“Nance Jr. and his fiancée, his college girlfriend, were interested in buying a house. He wanted to get a sense of whether the Lakers planned on keeping him around, and Pelinka told him that the Lakers would only trade him if it meant landing one of the game’s three best players. He told him to buy the house, multiple sources confirmed.

Before Nance could get that far, however, he received a call on the morning of Feb. 8, 2018. He and Jordan Clarkson had been traded to Cleveland in a salary dump that cleared cap space for the Lakers to be able to offer two max slots in the summer.”

The fact that this has been exposed and is now out there as knowledge for other free agents, this can’t be anything that helps the franchise. It creates an illusion of distrust knowing that the Lakers are willing to lie to players.

The Lakers are in desperate need of another star to join the team to play alongside LeBron James but with many people around the league disliking Rob Pelinka, it will be a tough sell.
