Despite a 14th place finish in the Western Conference, there is optimism in Dallas. After a mid-season trade brought one of the best big-man scorers in the NBA to the roster, the team is primed for a big improvement next season.
But could a big-name acquisition in free agency put them even further over the edge of contention? According to Josh Robbins of The Athletic, the Mavericks have been keeping an eye on the All-Star big man.
“It should be noted that Mavericks dispatched a high-ranking member of their front office to observe several post-trade deadline Magic games, ostensibly to scout Vucevic.”
Vucevic would be a great acquisition for them. Alongside Porzingis, it would make a great one-two punch in the frontcourt.
Unfortunately, creating the cap space for Vuc will be tough, but it’s certainly possible. The Mavericks have the ability to offer Nikola Vucevic a four-year, $140.6 million contract if they sign him before giving Kristaps Porzingis his massive contract extension. It will also require them to let go of Dorian Finney-Smith and Maxi Kleber in the 2019 NBA free agency.
Regardless, it would be well worth the effort. With Porzingis, Luka Doncic, and Nikola Vucevic, the Mavericks would be well on their way to making a postseason return.
