It was all but confirmed: Tyronn Lue would take over head coaching duties for the Los Angeles Lakers after he beat out a very short list of candidates for the position. Reports indicated that he and the team were in the final stages of working out a deal.

But just a week after Lue made his “lasting impression” on Jeanie Buss and the Lakers brass, it seems both sides will be looking in another direction. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the team and Ty Lue reached an “impasse” in their negotiations, meaning they could not find common ground on at least one issue in their talks. Thus, L.A.’s coaching search will have to continue.

In a follow-up update, Woj indicated the Lakers are high on Jason Kidd and were trying to get him wheeled into the coaching staff as an assistant under Lue. This ultimatum was likely the root of their disagreement. But could Kidd be next for the top job now that Lue is likely out of the picture?

Whatever the case, this latest limbo brings only more dysfunction and confusion to a franchise that has seemingly been addicted to it in recent years. Despite Jeanie’s best efforts to right the ship, her decisions are only putting the Lakers into a deeper hole.

Where they go next now, after all of this, is not going to be an easy matter to determine for the famed 16x NBA Champions.
