Just days after Stephen A Smith reported that Klay Thompson was unhappy with his role in Golden State, Steve Kerr was there to refute it. According to ESPN’s Nick Friedell, the Warriors aren’t too concerned with the possibility of Klay being swayed by another organization despite the rumors.
“I know that everybody — coaches, management, ownership — everybody wants Klay back,” Kerr said, according to Friedell. “I think the feeling is just, Klay wants to be here, we want Klay.”
Klay leaving Golden State was always a long-shot. He was there from the very beginning, is a fan-favorite, and is likely to get the max if KD leaves. The only threat to this plan would stem from his role, which some see as unfair to Thompson. As one of the best two-way players in the game (and arguably the second best shooter), some are inclined to think he would thrive as the leader of his own team.
If all goes normal this summer, we will not get the chance to find out. No other team really has the allure or history the Warriors have with Klay, and Kerr all but confirmed that the team will make it a priority to keep him this summer.
