In the aftermath of a brutal Game 7 loss, the Philadelphia 76ers face a grueling summer of decisions ahead. With 4 All-Stars who do not necessarily fit together, paying to keep all of them in town is just unrealistic.

So, then, how do they decide who stays and who goes?

Ben Simmons, who has been looked at as a centerpiece for the franchise, could be one of the ones to go — and the Lakers could be the key to making the move.

NBC Sports Philadelphia quoted one Western Conference executive as stating that the Sixers might wish to offer Simmons to the Lakers for none other than LeBron James.

It’s early in that process. Leonard’s shot just fell through the net. But one Western Conference executive brought up a name that could be a Simmons trade target: LeBron James.

“I think they very well might explore that,” said a rival executive of Philadelphia.

As the Lakers look to remake their franchise, they have been trying to forge their identity around LeBron James. But with their current state (and especially if they fail to secure another star in free agency), might they be better off moving on from even LeBron?

With a 22-year-old Ben Simmons, L.A. would have a piece for the future and could essentially hit the reset button. No longer would they be on James’ time, but they could build around the young pieces and grow in a pressure-free environment.

The Sixers would become instant title contenders behind LeBron, Embiid, and Butler.

It is a deal that would give both sides what they want, and one that would shake the league to its core.
