The Matthijs de Ligt story is going to be one of the most entertaining during this summer transfer window since the Dutch defender is followed by every big club in Europe and nobody looks completely sure where he will be playing next season.
In recent days we learned Manchester United had launched a stunning £70m offer for Matthijs in an effort to beat Barcelona to sign the youngster, but now there are several reports saying the Red Devils will miss out on the defender’s signature.
Following a great season as Ajax’s captain, de Ligt caught the attention of every European giant with Barcelona leading the race to sign him. Now, according to the Mirror, the Blaugrana have refused to pay the defender’s agent’s £12m fee to oversee the transfer.
Following that, United’s neighbors Manchester City have come back to the race for Matthijs’ services. Perhaps Pep Guardiola might have some advantage over Man. Utd. as de Ligt has stated he’d like to join a team competing in Champions League, something that would complicate a potential landing from de Ligt in Old Trafford, but everything points out the biggest favorite to buy the Dutch international is Barcelona.
Most fans thought initially de Ligt was set to join Barcelona and Ajax teammate Frenkie de Jong next season, and, if the Catalonians figure out what to do with Matthijs’ agent’s demands, there won’t be much left to do for any other team that tries to get the Dutchman signature.
Sky Sports have stated United have themselves ruled out any move for De Ligt while ESPN has reported the English side expects to lose the race to sign the center-back, even though they have put him as their top target this offseason.

It’s believed by Man. Utd. that Barcelona have already reached an agreement with the player a couple of months ago, something that would not leave any chances for them and would make a de Ligt’s move to Catalonia just a matter of time, even if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team offers a more lucrative deal.
