After a 2-0 start, the Bucks’ season was abruptly ended at the hands of Kawhi and the Raptors. And although their season-ending defeat cost them a chance at the title, the implications go much further than that.

In a story by ESPN’s Malika Andrews, the Bucks’ chances of keeping Giannis correlates to how well they can build a winning roster around him.

“Antetokounmpo has consistently made public proclamations of his love for Milwaukee, as he grew up and became acclimated to American culture in Cream City after moving from Greece. Antetokounmpo adores the Bucks medical staff. His mother moved to Milwaukee. But he is all about winning. In more concrete terms, a source close to Antetokounmpo said that getting to the NBA Finals is not just an ambition, it could tip the scales as he weighs his contractual future. And if they can reach the NBA Finals next season, the Bucks can improve their chances of signing Antetokounmpo to the supermax in the summer of 2020.”

See, if Milwaukee proves to Giannis that they can be a place he wins titles, there is little doubt he would stay. But as we have seen all too many times before, maintaining a Championship level team is no stroll through the park. For small-market franchise’s especially, they have trouble keeping and attracting key players in the city.

If what we saw this past season was a fluke, it could cost the Bucks one of the NBA’s best young players.
