By all accounts, the 2019 Draft is only three deep — as in, only three players are sure-fire stars. After that, there is a significant drop off in star potential.
So when the Knicks were gifted the #3 overall pick, some saw it as a blessing. With Zion going first, and the Grizzlies focused at Morant at second, most assumed the Knicks would pick up RJ Barrett at third.
But an additional report by the Sporting News’ Sean Deveney suggests the Knicks might go a different direction, one aimed toward Texas Tech’s Jarrett Culver.
Rumors have even cropped up about the Knicks considering Culver over Barrett with the No. 3 pick. At the least, the Knicks will weigh the option.
As for Barrett, he had hoped to drop past #2, to get picked by either the Knicks or Lakers.
According to an NBA source, the 6-foot-7 Duke swingman prefers if he drops past Memphis, to No. 3 or No. 4, to get to play with either the Knicks or Lakers.
Whether or not either team will keep their pick is still a question. Both franchises have been heavily involved in trade rumors and for the Lakers especially, it seems likely they will use #4 pick as a trade chip for a star.
But if the Knicks pass on Barrett, and he lands with L.A., it would make things all the more interesting for the dysfunctional franchise.
