The 2018/19 season has come to its end for European clubs that now are ready to take the competition to different grounds in the summer transfer window. This season was a very good one for several teams that featured some of the most talented and impressive players in every competition they played.

Albeit some footballers gained more attention than others, there was a big number of players who displayed the best of their games and earned a spot in the best squad of the year. Just in case you missed some things this season, that is exactly what we’re going to show you now: the best starting XI of the season, a team that nobody could defeat at this very moment, filled with the hottest players of the year.

This is the perfect and unbeatable squad in soccer right now.

Formation: 4-3-3

Goalkeeper: Alisson Becker

Alisson Becker was without any hesitation the best goalkeeper of the season, as the Brazilian goalie landed in Liverpool and instantly became the leader of the team. Becker was a goalkeeper that responded whenever he was challenged and never showed any sign of being scared to play for a huge club like Liverpool, unlike the prior two starters Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet.

This year he was a very important figure in the Reds’ season that ended up with the team finishing as runners-up in the Premier League behind Manchester City, racking up 97 points and losing only one game in 21 clean sheets for the keeper.

Moreover, the Brazilian took his side to win the maximum tournament a team can aspire to win in Europe, the Champions League against Tottenham, where Becker was the man of the match, rejecting every opportunity the Spurs had to score.

Right Back: Trent Alexander-Arnold

Another Liverpool player is featured in this lineup and this time we’re talking about one of the most exciting wonderkids in the football world, Trent Alexander-Arnold. This youngster has enchanted everybody in the last couple of seasons and this one he took his game to the next level.

Alexander-Arnold is one of the most skilled players in his position at this moment, setting the bar for others, including players who are older than him. He showed vertigo in every game, he defended properly, joined teammates in the attack and showed an intelligence that made him the best right back of the season.

For instance, people still remember the play he did against Barcelona to give Liverpool the chance to qualify to the Champions League Finals.

Center Back: Virgil van Dijk

Virgil van Dijk is not only one of the best center-backs in the world, but he is also one of the best footballers overall on earth at this very moment. The Dutchman has increased his level ever since he made it to the Premier League, first with Southampton and now with Liverpool. Virgil is a very dominant player, a complete wall when it comes to 1-on-1 duels and the best partner for goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

He is considered a top-five player in the Premier League and his good performances won’t be stopping in the near future. We are in front of one of those players that marks a generation and this guy can end his career as probably the best center back of all time. There are players who are leaders of a team without being the official captain and that’s the exact definition of Virgil van Dijk.

Center Back: Matthijs de Ligt

We’re borrowing the starting center backs from the Dutch national side to create this team, but just like van Dijk, Matthijs de Ligt played in a great fashion this year. This youngster has turned numerous heads to him with his performances this campaign and now it looks like half the continent is interested in signing the Ajax academy product.

Matthijs became the captain of Ajax at the age of 19 and, contrary to what many people believed was going to happen, he stood up and embrace his responsibility, even helping the Dutch side to qualify to the Champions League semi-finals for the first time in over 20 years while winning a domestic double with the Lancers. This is one of the players who will rule football in the future; you just have to take a look at the things he’s already demonstrated he’s capable of doing on the pitch.

Left Back: Andrew Robertson

Liverpool undoubtedly had a terrific season and Andrew Robertson is another good example of that. This Scottish player is not as known as others left backs in the world, but the work he does on the pitch earned him a spot in this team.

Robertson alongside Alexander-Arnold created one of the most dynamic and entertaining pair of wing backs in European football, with the two players creating a lot of chances for his teammates that took Liverpool to have the marvelous 2018/19 season the Reds had. Albeit this guy is not the fastest in his position, but he accompanies his teammates in the attack, is a very good defender and has a left-leg kick that creates a lot of dangers for rivals.

Right Midfielder: Donny van de Beek

We are now with the creative zone and here we had a lot of good players this year, but only three of them made it to our team. Donny van de Beek, just like most of his teammates in Ajax, took the world by storm this term with their incredible performances and all the accolades they achieved.

Donny was a great partner for Frenkie de Jong this season; he showed how good he can be as a passer and how dangerous he can be when he decides to take the ball to the rival area and create chances either for himself or his teammates. He is expected to leave the club this season and take his talents to another team that can enhance Donny’s level. He is still young and has time to reach his peak, so the sky’s the limit for this guy.

Central Midfielder: Frenkie de Jong

Frenkie de Jong is another starlet that turned everybody’s head to him. Unfortunately for every team which isn’t named Barcelona, de Jong was locked by the Catalans before anybody else tried to steal the midfielder from Amsterdam. De Jong, as you could see this season, is one of the most elegant and sophisticated midfielders in football nowadays.

He can run the team’s offensive through a whole game, can connect well with the attackers and the defenders and has a great intelligence on the pitch. Frenkie is seeing as the new Xavi by many people and the season he had with Ajax only confirmed that. We still have to wait to see the things he’ll be able to do in Barcelona, but the future looks bright for the Dutchman.

Left Midfielder: Christian Eriksen

Christian Eriksen has been one of the best midfielders in European football for quite some time now, but the Danish player made sure to make it to the best of the best list with his performances this term. The Tottenham Hotspur star improved his level significantly and now is linked with a move to various major European squads.

Eriksen was one of the best passers in Europe this season, ranking third in assists in the Premier League with 12 and creating a lot of opportunities for a Tottenham squad that managed to get to the Champions League Finals without any signing. This Danish midfielder was one of the highest points of the team this season alongside Lucas Moura, and that’s why he’s one of the best midfielders of the campaign.

Right Winger: Lionel Messi

Every time a season comes to an end it is common to see Lionel Messi in every best players’ lists and this one wasn’t the exception. Albeit Messi and his Barcelona fell apart in the Champions League semis against Liverpool and the Copa del Rey final against Valencia, Messi still managed to have a very good season individually speaking.

The Argentinian star was the top scorer of the Champions League with 12 goals, four more than his closest pursuer Robert Lewandowski and was the one who attempted more shots with 24. Messi also went to finish as the top scorer of the La Liga with 36 goals and if that wasn’t good enough, he tied with Pablo Sarabia as the best assistant, too, with 13. There is not much left to say about Messi, but this guy keeps demonstrating he’s not from this planet every single season.

Center Forward: Cristiano Ronaldo

Just like Messi’s, Cristiano Ronaldo’s appearances on these types of lists are mandatory every season. The Portuguese striker, despite having left Real Madrid this season to join Juventus, still had a very good season, even though it wasn’t as successful as the prior three he had with Los Blancos. Still, Ronaldo became the leader of the team as soon as he landed in Turin.

Perhaps he didn’t count with the best players supporting him, but CR7 still took Juve to win the Serie A title for the eighth straight season. In doing so, he scored 21 goals, ranking 4th among all Serie A players; he also was the one with the most shot attempted with 151, showing that he was very active in front of the rivals’ nets. Perhaps his numbers weren’t as big as they used to, but Ronaldo made sure to remain as one of the best frontmen in football this year.

Left Winger: Sadio Mane

Here we have the last piece of the best attack and team that any manager could have this season. Sadio Mane’s campaign was just incredibly; perhaps is unfair to say this seeing the seasons van Dijk and Alisson had with Liverpool, but Mane was the best player of his team all season long. It wasn’t just that, he was the best player of the Premier League this term without any hesitation and his presence here is obligatory.

Sadio shared touches with Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah and still managed to overshadow them with his great performances. This season he finished as one of the top scorers of the Premier League thanks to his 22 goals while having outstanding performances in Champions League, like the one he had against Bayern in Allianz Arena, a game that made Liverpool look as serious contenders to win the tournament, something they eventually did.

Mane is one of the best forwards in football right now and his good performances don’t see to be nearing their end at this very moment. Liverpool indeed found a gem in this one.
