The race for one of the hottest wonderkids in European football is on and albeit many people believe it is already decided which team is going to be able to sign Ajax’s starlet Matthijs de Ligt this summer, not everybody thinks the same way and now the competition to purchase the center-back is harder than ever.

The 19-year-old Ajax captain is expected to take his talents somewhere else this summer after a marvelous season in the Eredivisie and Champions League with the Lancers. It was first thought that Matthijs was going to join teammate Frenkie de Jong in Catalonia, but the picture looks more uncertain as the days go by.

Albeit Barcelona is said to be the first option for de Ligt this offseason, the Dutchman’s agent, Mino Raiola, have reportedly made things a little bit difficult for the current the La Liga champions, as he’s trying to get the best financial package he can get.

According to SPORT, there are still four other clubs in competition for the wonderkid: Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United and Liverpool, with SPORT claiming that PSG and Liverpool are the preferred options from Raiola’s perspective.

The infamous agent apparently prefers PSG and Liverpool to sign de Ligt as they are most likely to ‘meet his requirements’. The Parisians have been linked with de Ligt in recent days and they have already started the talks with his representatives. On the other side, Liverpool have said they don’t plan to spend big money this summer and not even the fact that de Ligt has a great relationship with Virgil van Dijk will make the Reds change their mind on this move.

Matthijs recently spoke to the Dutch television channel RTL4 about his future, as quoted by SPORT.

“There are various options and I really want to choose the best. I am excited about what could happen in the near future, but I am also trying to stay calm. I view this as a challenge — that is the most important thing. There are several options and I really want to pick the best one. Logically, one option is better than another

“Life abroad could be difficult, but I am still an ordinary Dutch guy — I am no different to the others. Perhaps living abroad will be more intense for me.”

Now it all comes to up to de Ligt and what he wants to do with his career. He has the best teams in Europe chasing him and now he has the last word on his future; this is one of the most intense histories of the summer transfer window and at this moment, it doesn’t look to have a near end.
