According to Ricky Rubio, the Utah Jazz have let him know that he’s not going to be a priority for them in the summer, something that doesn’t come as a surprise if we consider the fact that they were trying to move him earlier in the season.
Rubio is a vastly underrated player, and truth to be told, he looks far from done. Yes, he’s been injury prone throughout the course of his career, but his defense and playmaking skills have always been great.
So, now that he’s set to become a free agent, there’s definitely going to be a huge market for him in the summer, and today, we’ll let you know about the top 5 teams he should definitely consider signing for.
5. Dallas Mavericks
The Dallas Mavericks already have two European stars in the making in Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis, so why not make it a European Big 3 while they’re at it by signing Rubio as well?
Doncic’s more effective off-ball and Rubio could definitely bring the best out of his game while also helping him on defense, and they’d be deadly in pick-and-pop situations with Porzingis ready to stretch the floor.
4. Indiana Pacers
The Indiana Pacers are really high on Aaron Holiday as their point guard for the future, but he’s still quite raw in both ends of the hardwood and he’ll take some time before being ready to run their offense.
So, with Darren Collison and Corey Joseph both set to become unrestricted free agents, it would make sense for them to add Rubio on a short term deal. They’re already playoff bound, so he’d be able to compete right away.
3. Orlando Magic
The Orlando Magic beat the odds and found a way to sneak into the playoffs this season, so there’s definitely some upside and room for improvement there, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see them trying to acquire proven veterans in the offseason.
Nikola Vucevic played at an All-Star level all season long even despite not having a true point guard running the offense for them, so Rubio could only make them a lot better, and they have enough money to convince him.
2. Phoenix Suns
The Phoenix Suns have been craving a starting point guard since they let Eric Bledsoe go a couple of seasons ago, and now that they struck out on a top 3 pick, they’re unlikely to get a marquee talent in this year’s Draft.
That’s why they should just make a run at Ricky Rubio, whose arguably going to be their only affordable choice in the offseason. He’d help Booker on defense, and could really bring the most of Ayton in the pick-and-roll.
1. New Orleans Pelicans
Rubio is an incredibly unselfish player. He’s never been high about himself, and he doesn’t exactly enjoy the spotlight, so he’d be great in the Pelicans just playing to make Zion Williamson a better player.
Jrue Holiday has been way better as a shooting guard and Elfrid Payton wasn’t the guy Alvin Gentry was expecting he’d be when he first signed him. The Pelicans are on the verge of playoff contention, so it’s a no-brainer for me.
