Weeks ago, everybody in their right mind would have told you that the Clippers were the ones who would land Kawhi Leonard when the dust cleared in July’s upcoming NBA free agency. Los Angeles is home to him, he wants a team of his own, and the Clips have assembled an admirable roster.
But in the hours following Toronto’s Game 3 win in the NBA Finals, the narrative has changed. In a report detailed by The Athletic, the Clippers are feeling increasingly pessimistic about their chances of landing Kawhi.

Doc Rivers and the front office have apparently been plotting for a future without Leonard. No matter what that might look like, it will no doubt be an unfortunate turn for them.
The Raptors, who are one win away from an NBA Championship, have given The Klaw everything he could want. A winning environment, an electric city, and a smart front office. The pieces are there for Kawhi to become a staple for a long time in that franchise. The Clippers, unfortunately, still have ground to make up, and may find themselves on a separate path entirely.
