Spanish giants Barcelona have been heavily linked with Ajax’s wonderkid Matthijs de Ligt for quite a while now and as the days go by, the Dutchman looks closer to join the Blaugrana. With the seemingly imminent arrival of de Ligt in Camp Nou, there have been several rumors of players who will abandon the club this offseason.
One of those is the former Olympique Lyonnais star Samuel Umtiti, who was reportedly on his way out of the club, but now the World Cup winner has confirmed his desire to stay at Catalonia even though the team is planning on bringing in the Dutch standout.
Umititi was evicted from Ernesto Valverde’s starting XI last campaign following the great manners the new arrival Clement Lenglet showed. Even so, Umtiti has told French radio station RTL he has no intention of leaving Catalonia anytime soon and is working hard to earn a place in the starting lineup.
A couple of Premier League squads were thought to be keeping tabs on this guy, but now all of that seems useless given Samuel’s desire to stay right where he is. This season he made 14 La Liga appearances, a considerable drop-off from the 25 matches he featured the last term.
In his interview with RTL, Umtiti stated:
“I have a contract and I feel happy in Barcelona. I had a complicated season, but that’s not why I will have any desire (to leave); I’ll be in Barcelona next season.”

Following his great participation in the last FIFA World Cup, Samuel was expected to become a regular starter in Barcelona, but Ernesto Valverde told otherwise. Still, if they manage to land Matthijs de Ligt and some other center-back, having a guy like Umtiti coming off the bench is a big advantage for the Cules.
