Cristiano Ronaldo has stated he has no interest in talking about the Ballon d’Or. Following the Portugal historical first win in the UEFA Nations League, CR7 was asked about his chances to win the trophy, but that doesn’t look like an interesting topic to discuss for him.

The Portugal star and his long-time rival Lionel Messi achieved something nobody has achieved in the past, as they won every Ballon d’Or for a decade until Luka Modric broke up that dominance with his victory in 2018. So, after Messi’s great season, it is expected that the Argentinian star is the frontrunner to win it once again, even more, when he’s about to play a new edition of the Copa American with his national side, and a victory in Brazil will probably make the competition harder for the award this year.

This campaign Ronaldo helped Juventus to clinch their eighth consecutive title while scoring 21 goals and giving 8 assists but failed to win the most wanted trophy in Turin, the Champions League. However, with his national team, he was just marvelous. Portugal qualified to the Nations League Final Four, scored three goals in the semis against Switzerland and was one of the best in his team where Portugal took on the Netherlands in the last game of the competition.

Messi, on the other hand, won the domestic league with Barcelona but failed in a tremendous way to win the Champions League, too, as his side Barcelona lost a 3-goal gap for the second consecutive season against Liverpool and fell short to win the Copa del Rey title against Valencia. Lionel finished the season as the La Liga top scorer and assistant with 36 goals and 13 assists, respectively.

When asked if Portugal’s victory takes him closer to get a sixth Ballon d’Or, Ronaldo answered (as quoted by Goal):

“The goal for the match was to win and to play well.”

As he left the mixed zone, reporters kept asking the same question, but he once again replied:

“No, I will not speak about the Ballon d’Or.”

It looks like the performances they have with their respective national teams for the rest of the year will have a big impact on whether one of these guys is going to win the Ballon d’Or once again or leave it to somebody else. Also, Virgil van Dijk looks like a huge dark horse in the competition with the two superstars, as he helped Liverpool have a wonderful Premier League season and win the Champions League while taking the Netherlands to the Nations League Finals. Perhaps CR7 and Messi will see how somebody else steals the Ballon d’Or award from them for the second straight year.
