Kawhi Leonard is currently battling it out in the 2019 NBA Finals as the Toronto Raptors are just one win away from an NBA championship. However, while he competes, opposing franchises are preparing to pursue the Raptors star in this upcoming offseason.
The New York Knicks are one of those teams who are planning to “aggressively pursue” Leonard this summer as sources have told SNY’s Ian Begley.
The Knicks have also been very interested in Kyrie Irving who looks to be almost certainly leaving the Boston Celtics during the off-season. However, the plans to chase after Kyrie may now be affected with it being rumored that the Celtics guard’s ideal new team would be the Brooklyn Nets. It’s been reported that Irving is planning on opting out of the final year of his current contract before this Thursday, this way the guard can enter unrestricted free agency.
As for Kawhi, the recent rumors have all come back to Kawhi moving to Los Angeles to play with the Clippers. A surprise run at a championship in Toronto may be the thing that keeps Kawhi north of the U.S border with more potential success to come.
The Knicks are also targeting Kevin Durant and if they were actually able to pick up both KD and Kawhi in the off-season, then the franchise is going to be one hell of a team in 2020. Durant’s recent Achilles injury he picked up during game 5 of the Finals may affect teams who are interested in but New York may be willing to take the risk.
For now, both Leonard and Durant have more important things to think about as Game 6 of the Finals begins tomorrow.
