The L.A. Lakers got their star. Now they need some depth.
WIth about $23 million in cap space this summer, they have enough money to lure in some big-time difference makers, one of which could be Clippers point guard Patrick Beverley, who will hit the market this summer with an “open mind.”
Sources tell me Patrick Beverley–a sensible FA target of the Bulls and Lakers–will be taking meetings with as many as 5 teams BEFORE meeting with the Clippers in 2 weeks. Clippers will be chasing max-type FAs, but Beverley won’t necessarily wait on an offer from them, I’m told.

The Lakers definitely need shooting to surround their duo, but Beverley would be a solid addition anyway. He is a gritty, mentally tough defensive-minded point guard who does not need to shine on offense. If L.A. feels like they need more defensive stoppers, they could look at Beverley to fill that role for them.
If not, the belief is he will re-sign with the Clippers or even make a move to Chicago if L.A. lands a bigger fish.
Nonetheless, in a market where stars are in abundance, a guy like Beverley is one of a kind in today’s league, and you can expect a number of teams to answer the call when the time comes this July.
