The New Orleans Pelicans are just decided to have the best possible offseason after earning the first overall pick of the upcoming NBA draft, which will allow them to select Zion Williamson, finally parting ways with Anthony Davis and receiving a great package in exchange, but now they’re keen to add more quality to the staff.
Since he was appointed as the New Orleans Pelicans Vice President of Basketball Operations, David Griffin has gotten to work to transform this team and he’s expected to some noise during this offseason, with New Orleans trying to assemble the best possible team for their soon-to-be brand new addition, the aforementioned Williamson.
Now with AD gone, the Pelicans have started to test the waters of potential trades, and they are aiming high according to the latest reports. Per Terry Pluto of Cleveland.com, one of the potential trade targets for the Pelicans is none other than Kevin Love of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Albeit the 2016 NBA Champions haven’t made Love available on the trading block in the 2019 NBA offseason, it won’t be a shock if David Griffin decides to ask about his availability.
According to Pluto, a source has told him that Griffin loves Love. Let’s recall that he was the Cavaliers’ GM that completed the blockbuster deal that landed Love in Quicken Loans Arena in exchange for former No. 1 picks Anthony Bennett and Andrew Wiggins to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
In this potential deal, Pluto suggested that NOLA could offer a trade package centered on the 2019 NBA Draft No. 4 pick they got for AD.
“Griffin has the No. 4 pick in the draft, right in front of the Cavs at No. 5. He also has a riverboat load of first-round picks after his big trade with the Lakers for Anthony Davis. And Griffin is a bit of riverboat gambler, as Cavs fans know when it comes to trades. The thinking on Love to New Orleans is Griffin decides to pair top pick Zion Williamson and all the young players he added from the Lakers (Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball and Josh Hart) with Love and returning guard Jrue Holiday and make a move for the playoffs within the next two seasons.”
Albeit Love won’t make the Pelicans the favorite team to win the Larry O’Brien next season, he’s an experienced guy who still has it, has played for big things and has actually won them, and can be a great tutor to the young blood of the Pelicans. If he can be a good leader for the Pelicans, they will eventually be a powerhouse in the league.
