Los Angeles Lakers new star Anthony Davis will officially be wearing No. 3 in the 2019-20 season after it was confirmed that LeBron James will not be switching numbers from the famous No. 23 after a lack of approval from Nike.
Anthony Davis has worn the No. 23 for his entire career before coming to Los Angeles, as a friendly gesture, James planned on switching back to No. 6 that he wore in the four years that he played in Miami so that his new star teammate could keep his number.
However, according to Yahoo’s Chris B. Haynes recently reported that the jersey switch will not be happening and the four-time MVP will remain wearing the No. 23. Haynes announced that the request to switch came after the March 15 deadline which was too late for the manufacturer Nike to approve it. For Nike, a switch in jersey numbers this late would have led to a major financial loss for the company.
According to ESPN, Nike could have found themselves losing “well into the tens of millions of dollars” on the switch due to the amount of already-produced LeBron James No. 23 Lakers jerseys.
Players do have the ability to buy out the jerseys if they choose to, it’s something that has occurred in the past, including Paul George when he was playing with the Indiana Pacers. James has decided not to go through with it for all the fans who have already bought a LeBron Lakers jersey during this off-season.
Anthony Davis will now be running up and down the court in the No. 3 jersey, taking it back to elementary school as he revealed in his latest Instagram post.
The new Davis jersey is sure to be a popular sell for Lakers fans, the big man may be the best Laker to ever wear the number three. Some may be disappointed that the two stars won’t be wearing 23 and 6 but Lakers fans won’t be too concerned about that if the franchise can contend for their next championship.
