2019 MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo says he would give up that title for a gold medal. During the official presentation of the pre-selection roster, Giannis did not hold back about his feelings for the Greek national team.
“I would change the MVP title for the gold medal in China. I always feel something special when playing for the national team. When you are starting the tournament and listening to the national anthem, the emotions can’t be described. After the first basket, the first plays, it is an amazing experience and every time I feel as proud as the first time. The feeling of winning with the national team is incredible and I have said before that I will always be part of the team, as long as I am healthy like this summer.”
As the Team USA roster dwindles by the day, Giannis made his pride and commitment towards the Greek team as clear as ever — so much so that he’d trade his MVP for a gold medal. And if, somehow, he lead his team over the USA in the World Cup, would it not be a greater achievement than winning that MVP?
Alas, Giannis is sure to keep trying, and he’ll have plenty of opportunities to win for the next several years. As for what else could be in store for the 3x All-Star, the sky is truly the limit for him as he approaches his 7th NBA season at just 24-years-old.
