This summer transfer window has seen several moves across Europe, with great players finding new teams, while others are still pushing to leave their current sides. Moreover, we can find very good footballers who did it great in their prior teams, whose contracts ended this summer and now are looking for a new club.
We see some successful footballers who have had very good careers struggling to get any offer. This is why we’re going to list off 10 football stars who are free agents and are still on the look for a new team this offseason. They have until September 2, so there is still hope for these guys.
Honorable Mention: Daniel Schwaab
10. Martin Skrtel
Skrtel is 34, but he still may be helpful for any team. He’s not in his best shape or as sharp as he used to be, but he can make a good addition to whichever teams he joins this offseason. One of the fiercest and roughest defenders in the Premier League in recent seasons.
9. Michael Vorm
Vorm is a very good keeper, he’s shown during his days with the Lillywhites that he can do the job, and counts with a lot of experience. Throughout his career, he earned 15 caps with the Dutch national side. Any club in need of an experienced goalie would be good if they land this guy.
8. Yohan Cabaye
He finished his stint with Al-Nasr this past season and is now on the hunt for a new club. He is 33 and still can be a quality player for anybody. Even at his age, playing at central midfield looks like the best option for him to refresh his game.
7. Fabio Coentrao
Injuries and controversies have taken a toll on Coentrao’s career, whose last team was Rio Ave. He played a single season there before getting fired, which brought him to this list. Still, he can be good for a team looking to add depth on defense and bring somebody with experience. This guy is a Champions League winner, so he must know one thing or two.
6. Danny Simpson
Right now he is 32, which is a complex age for a full-back given that he’s lost all his explosiveness and isn’t as fast as before. Still, even though he’s not at his peak level, he managed six Premier League caps with the Foxes last term, so he might have hopes to find a new team shortly.
5. Hatem Ben Arfa
He found his way to Newcastle with the Magpies hoping to get a steal, but Ben Arfa showed nothing, becoming a fluke and one of the worst signings in the history of the league and Newcastle. After that, he wandered around, playing here and there, even making a surprise move to Paris Saint-Germain, but last June he left his last team, Rennes, and is currently looking for a new one now.
4. Claudio Marchisio
He played for Russian side Zenit but was cast aside by them, becoming a free agent again this summer. This is one of the most talented midfielders of his time, a classy player who could send the ball wherever he wanted to and unlock any defense.
At age 34, Claudio still has things to offer and one could say it won’t be hard for him to find a new team.
3. Daniel Sturridge
The English striker played from 2013 through 2019 with the Reds until they decided to loan him to West Bromwich last year. Sturridge tried to earn a spot on Liverpool’s starting XI, but he was never a favorite for Jurgen Klopp. Right now he’s linked with Italian clubs, but nothing has been officially announced on Sturridge’s future.
2. Mario Balotelli
He went from playing in Internazionale to Milan, to try to revamp his career in Liverpool; then it looked like he had a hope in Nice, but at the end, he remained inconsistent, which led Nice to send him to Marseille, his last team. This summer he was linked with a move to Brazilian giants Flamengo, but those rumors have vanished now.
1. Franck Ribery
The Frenchman helped Bayern to play in three Champions League finals, dramatically winning one of them, assisting his partner in crime Arjen Robben to score the goal that gave the Bavarians the title against Borussia Dortmund in 2013. He spent the last 12 years of his career with Bayern before parting ways with the German giants last summer.
Unlike Robben, Ribery hasn’t retired from the game yet and is still looking for a team. He’s been heavily linked with Fiorentina, but we’re still waiting to see how this whole thing is going to finish.
