When Cristiano Ronaldo completed his record-breaking move from Manchester United to Real Madrid back in 2009, his rivalry with Barcelona’s Lionel Messi took a major turn, and it hasn’t slowed down a single bit ever since.

Both of them are considered the best players of our generation and arguably in the history of the game, and with them tied with 5 Ballon d’Ors a piece, you could make a case for either one of them as the greatest ever.

That’s why Cristiano Ronaldo gave his insights on who he thinks the best player is, and, just like you’d expect, he claimed he’s a slightly superior player thanks to his ability to adapt to different countries:

“In the case of Messi, he is an excellent player. Not only for the Ballons d’Or he has won but for also being a player who was always at the top year after year, just like me. The difference with me is that I’ve played for different clubs and I also won the Champions League with different clubs,” Cristiano told DAZN.

Moreover, the Portuguese superstar went on to praise Messi for being able to keep up the competition at a high level, something this game had never seen before both of them came along.

“I was the top scorer in the Champions League six times in a row. Obviously, I have not seen such a rivalry between two players at the top of the mountain for so many years. There are great players that I respect who have three, four or, at most, five years at their peak. Ten years? I’ve never seen that.

I have never seen players, as we say in Portugal: ‘breaking stones every year’, scoring 40 or 50 goals, winning titles, always being up there. This is the hardest thing to achieve in football. It takes a lot to keep up and always be on top. This fit, slender body did not fall from the sky! I say it jokingly but it’s true, there’s a lot of work behind the trophies,” Ronaldo concluded.

Truth to be told, we’re lucky to have witnessed both of these legends at their peak, and instead of trying to figure out which one of them is better, we’d much rather simply enjoy them while we still can.
