Not everybody has what it takes to succeed at Real Madrid. Being good isn’t enough, you have to be disciplined, you have to be put in a position to succeed, and you even have to be lucky to make it at Santiago Bernabeu.

When Real Madrid signed Luka Jovic, everybody put their hopes on the Serbian, as he had just dominated the Bundesliga and the UEFA Europa League with his goal-scoring and talents.

However, he’s yet to make an impact for Los Blancos, as he’s currently Karim Benzema’s backup. Still, former Real Madrid Omar Mascarell believes his time behind Benzema will only help him develop into a world-class scorer.

“Luka will learn a lot from Karim, I’m sure. He is still very young, so you have to be patient with him. He is just coming to a new country with a new language and a new culture. Not everyone can handle the pressure at Real Madrid. I wish for him to succeed. He has the abilities to do it, I’ve rarely seen such a striker at his age. I’m sure he’ll be worth the fee the club paid for him,” the Schalke 04 midfielder told Spox.

Mascarell went on to laud Benzema, even going as far as calling him “the best center-forward of the past 10 years”, adding that it’s not easy to adjust to Real Madrid as a young player:

“Real Madrid is the biggest club in the world. After all that I’ve seen at this club, nothing impresses me as quickly. In my first training session with the first team, I played with Mesut Ozil, Cristiano Ronaldo, Xabi Alonso and Sergio Ramos in a team. That was absolutely mad.

As a young player from the club’s own youth system, you have almost no chance against such superstars. Karim Benzema maybe impressed me the most. For me, he is the world’s best center-forward in the past 10 years, but also an incredibly nice and down to earth guy who always helps young players and gives them advice. That’s why everyone at Real Madrid loves him,” he concluded.

Mascarell’s tenure at Real Madrid wasn’t exactly bright, as he only managed to make one appearance with the first team. Jovic, on the other hand, looks poised for stardom at Santiago Bernabeu, but he still needs to adapt to his new life in Spain first.
