Joel Embiid is really a character and every day we discover more things about his past, and how he became the great talent he is at this very moment. He started playing basketball at the age of 15 and had to learn a lot of things using different ways.
In fact, the Cameroonian big man revealed in 2018 how he learned to shoot. In a story he wrote for The Players’ Tribune, the Philadelphia 76ers star described how he came up with his shooting form. Well, it was watching YouTube videos.
That is pretty normal for guys trying to learn new skills and the basics of basketball. The thing is, he did not look for generic YouTube videos; he said he didn’t search “good shooting form” or “how to shoot three-pointers” but something curious and totally unexpected.
“Then the light bulb went off, man. I typed in the magic words.
“WHITE PEOPLE SHOOTING 3 POINTERS.
“Listen, I know it’s a stereotype, but have you ever seen a normal, 30-year-old white guy shoot a three-pointer? That elbow is tucked, man. The knees are bent. The follow-through is perfect. Always. You know how in America, there’s always an older guy wearing like EVERLAST sweat-shorts at the court? That guy is always a problem. His J is always wet.
“Those are the guys I learned from on YouTube. Just random people shooting threes with perfect form. Me and Michael [Frazier II, who went on to play in college at Florida] would play after practice for hours, and I’d just try to imitate how they shot the ball, and I started being able to compete. It was crazy, because getting some range changed my whole game. Teams couldn’t play off me anymore, and I started doing a lot better.”
Embiid is a treasure, that’s a fact. It’d be interesting to know how Stephen Curry or Klay Thompson learned how to shoot, but we’re pretty sure they didn’t use the ‘Embiid method’. Last season Embiid averaged 30% from beyond the arc, so his Youtube lessons turned out to be very helpful for the Process.
