The FIBA World Cup is here and Team USA remains as the biggest favorite to win the tournament and continue their dominance in international basketball. However, this year things might be different for them given all the withdrawals they saw before the start of the competition.
Others national teams will use that in their favor, and some of them look very confident in their chances to dethrone the U.S. and claim the gold in China next September 15.
One of those teams is Australia, who recently edged out the Americans during a friendly match. For instance, Australian center Andrew Bogut believes his country has a real shot to beat Team USA.
During an interview with Marc Stein of the New York Times, Bogut admits that in the past tournaments, Australia settled to the fact that they were unable to beat Team USA. However, after all the NBA stars who withdrew from the USA national team, the Boomers saw a sliver of hope.
“That mindset has changed,” Bogut said. “When I first joined the national team, we never really had that true belief of beating the U.S.A. Whereas now we genuinely think, if we play it the right way, we have a chance to beat them.”
The veteran’s comments are not a surprise for anybody. Australia has a very interesting group of players for this tournament, even without Ben Simmons. They count with the likes of Bogut, Joe Ingles, Patty Mills, Aron Baynes, and Matthew Dellavedova to take it all. Alongside Serbia, the Australian team looks like the biggest candidate to take the title off Team USA hands.
