Ousmane Dembele’s tenure at Barcelona has been far from impressive. Indiscipline, fines, and constant injuries have prevented the Frenchman from proving he’s actually worthy of the huge money they paid for him.

Hence, former Barcelona loanee Kevin-Prince Boateng addressed his situation and didn’t hold back on his words for the 22-year-old, criticizing his attitude and claiming he still needs to mature a lot:

“There are players who do that in defiance, but that’s different with him, he’s just like a little boy. One who earns a lot of money. One who is extremely public. You have to point him in the right direction. For me, he’s still a little boy who was thrown into this giant pool, suddenly cost €150m overnight, and still doesn’t know how it all works because he just wants to play football,” the German midfielder told Sport Bild.

Dembele has been on the wrong side of Barcelona’s officials for quite some time after refusing to report early to the team’s training facilities and all of his off-court antics.

So far, he’s only scored 18 goals for the Blaugrana after breaking out for Borussia Dortmund a couple of seasons ago, and the team was trying to get rid of him during the last transfer window, but Paris Saint-Germain weren’t interested in any deal surrounding him or Philippe Coutinho.

There’s still a lot of room for improvement for such a young and talented player, but with Antoine Griezmann joining the team in the summer, he’s not likely to be featured a lot in Ernesto Valverde’s offense.

Should Dembele stay at Barcelona for the long run, he’ll need to embrace a much different attitude and prove that soccer is his main and lone priority.

Otherwise, he’ll risk being yet another wonderkid whose career could’ve been ten times as good as it was, and he’ll be the only one to blame for it.
