After all the things that were said during the summer transfer window, Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen, Danny Rose, Christian Eriksen, and Victor Wanyama remain with Tottenham, and now it’s time to focus on the team.
With less than a year left on the contracts of Eriksen, Alderweireld, and Vertonghen, the team’s boss has reminded them of their duties with their current side. Mauricio Pochettino said, via talkSPORT:
“In one month I think it will start again with the rumors, for sure, because the situation of the squad is going to help those rumors appear.
“Christian is in my plans. When you sign the contract, like Christian who signed for five or six years, you need to be committed from day one to the last day.
“It’s not easy when it’s one player who wants to leave, but when it’s a few players, who start to make it difficult to create a good dynamic, a positive dynamic, but now it’s to be positive.”
Eriksen and Vertonghen have been regulars under Poch during his 5-year stint in North London, but this season they have seen more games from the bench than on the field. The Argentinian boss has reflected on this, stating that anybody can go to the bench.
“No one is guaranteed a place 100 percent in our starting XI,” he added.
“The difference is whether he wants to extend the contract or not. Different players have different goals.
“No one is going to say ‘I want to leave the club’ and, if no one wants you, then you say, ‘no, I love the club.’ You kill yourself then.
“The reality is that managers, players, coaching staff – sometimes they have one year left and they are happy, others need a different challenge.”
“Now they are going to have the same possibility as another player to play.
“Now we need to start to win games. That is our objective. Be refocused and who is not refocused is going to be out.”
Tottenham are set to play for big things this season, and the boss needs all the elements he can get to fight for as many trophies as they can. There is still fear that any of these players will leave the club in January, but right now they need to be focused.
