Historically, the Golden State Warriors are coming off one of the best runs in NBA history. Historically, Giannis Antetokounmpo is coming off one of the best individual seasons we have ever seen by a player.
The thought of them somehow uniting one day, no matter how far fetched, seems almost unfair.
Well, according to ESPN’s Rachel Nichols, it may not even be that far-fetched after all.
If Giannis enters free agency in 2021, Nichols says it’s possible he could join the Dubs. How?
With Klay, Steph, Draymond, and D’Lo still on the payroll, the dollars wouldn’t match up if the Warriors tried to sign Giannis outright. With D’Angelo Russell, however, they could swap him for the Greek Freak in a sign-and-trade with Milwaukee.
We know the Warriors are pursuing him. Back in February, Marc Stein reported that the Dubs would consider the idea if Kevin Durant left in 2020.
I can promise you, furthermore, that the Warriors have internally mused about a run at Giannis — however futile it may prove to be — in the event they can’t convince Kevin Durant to re-sign this summer. Trying to sign the most attractive free agent available is on the first page of the Golden State owner Joe Lacob’s playbook.
As for Giannis himself, he has shown no public indication of wanting out of Milwaukee. In fact, the team is ready and willing to offer him the full five-year max when he is eligible.
Still, feelings change, time moves, and there are no guarantees. So while a world with Giannis Antetokounmpo wearing a Warriors jersey is far-off, it is not a world that is impossible to behold.
Give it another year, and we’ll find out.
