Is there a rift in the Ball family? In the latest episode of their Facebook series “Ball In The Family,” LaVar and his son Lonzo were captured having a pretty heated discussion about the family name.
See, since the Alan Foster fiasco, Big Baller Brand has been in a bad ways — with a bad reputation and falling in the backburner as Lonzo himself faded from the spotlight. In an apparent business meeting regarding the state of the brand, Lonzo suggested to his father that they re-brand completely, starting with a name change.
Needless to say, LaVar was less than impressed with the idea, calling his own son (who has struggled with injuries over the past few seasons) “damaged goods.”
“When I come up with a name and there’s somebody telling me to change it, that’s like telling me to change your name,” LaVar told Lonzo.
“That’s like people saying, ‘Hey, change Lonzo’s name to Alfonso on the fact that he been damaged goods for the last two years.’”

Zo is probably used to the antics of his father by now — he has lived with him for over 20 years now. Still, those words are pretty harsh.
After being selected 2nd overall in the 2017 draft by the Lakers, Lonzo has missed a total of 63 games for a string of different injuries. Put that fact next to his broken jumper, and it is clear that Ball has some problems.
Nonetheless, his point about changing the name makes sense. A fresh start might just do well for Big Baller Brand.
