James Harden is set to pair up with Russell Westbrook to take the Houston Rockets to finally compete for the NBA title. However, not everybody is fully sold on these two knowing their style of play. Some sacrifices will need to be made, but these guys look confident in their chances to claim the Larry O’Brien next season.
NBA legend Scottie Pippen has given his insight on this matter, stating that Harden needs to clear the way for Russ to become the new leader of the team. Recently, Rockets’ owner Tilman Fertitta talked about the prospect of these two stars sharing touches in the Toyota Center, which has raised a lot of expectations around the team.
The former Chicago Bulls player stated on ESPN’s The Jump that the Beard needs to ‘pass the torch’ to Brodie this upcoming season.
“I think Russell Westbrook is the piece Mike D’Antoni needs,” Pippen said. “If you look at some of the point guards he’s had in the past, Chris Paul, Steve Nash, this guy got a motor and he has an engine and he will play the point guard position a lot differently than those two guys and I think his force, his thrust is going to help the Houston Rockets.
“We haven’t seen that all Houston Rockets in a while. We’ve been watching James Harden take his time, bring the ball down court, create his own offense and then if you don’t have anything, he kicks it off. Westbrook is gonna push the ball up and he’s gonna get you on your heels night in and night out and I think this is gonna be a big positive for the offense; they like to score points, Westbrook loves to push the ball, he loves to score and I think this is a match made in heaven.”
Even though Pippen’s words sound very promising for the Houston Rockets, the general consensus is that the Harden-Westbrook duo won’t be as good as some like to think it will. Still, we have to wait until the season starts to find out who was right, the people who believed in them or the ones who didn’t have many hopes on this partnership.
