Virgil van Dijk completely turned around Liverpool’s defense, and he quickly became one of the main reasons why the Reds were able to dominate throughout the UEFA Champions League last season.

Hence, there’s no wonder why some of the biggest clubs in the world have been lurking around the Dutch center-back, so Liverpool must act fast and sign him to a contract extension right now.

However, when he was asked about his new deal with the Reds, van Dijk wasn’t interested in entertaining details and pretty much shook off the press, giving away no details whatsoever.

“There is nothing going on, so that’s it. That’s not on me. I saw some reports in the media that I was agreeing on a new deal and stuff. But I’m not even discussing anything at the moment. The only thing I want to do right now is focus on the games and we’ll see in the future what may happen,” van Dijk told Sky Sports News.

The center-back has taken a major step forward since last season and is now one of the front-runners to win this year’s Ballon d’Or, but Dries Mertens and Napoli were still too much to handle during their UEFA Champions League debut.

Nonetheless, van Dijk dismissed the talk of that loss vs. Napoli being a wake-up call for the European champions after a great start of their season:

“It didn’t feel like a wake-up call. It felt like it was going to be a draw, and then the penalty changed everything in the game. It shouldn’t be a wake-up call. We have been performing outstandingly since the start of the season so there is no reason to panic. And in the game as well, we played well, we put them under pressure, we created opportunities on the break. So there were a lot of positive things, the only thing not positive was the result”, he concluded.
