Real Madrid’s season has started off with the left foot, after everybody expected Zinedine Zidane to work his magic again and take the team back from the ground.
However, Zizou’s team hasn’t looked much different from the ones Julen Lopetegui and Santiago Solari had, even despite their huge investment in the summer.
Still, former Barcelona legend Xavi doesn’t think this is the beginning of the end for Los Blancos, as he’s sure they’ll rise again in no time and compete in all fronts:
“No, not at all. I’ve already lived it so many times. Madrid have a thousand lives. Last year is a mirage. Real Madrid will fight for everything again. For sure. For now, the old guard is playing, but let’s see what happens to the new ones. I think Madrid is going to compete for sure, for sure, for sure. It is true that a major revolution was expected, but in the end, Madrid are always there,” the Spaniard told Marca.
Los Blancos have only been able to secure 8 out of 12 possible points in La Liga and Paris Saint-Germain demolished them 3-0 in their UEFA Champions League opener despite not having Kylian Mbappe and Neymar Jr.
Still, Xavi thinks Barcelona will have a tough time matching up with their longtime rivals in the future, and even claimed Atletico de Madrid will be a tough challenger in Spain as well, even though he doesn’t see Cholo Simeone changing his tactics despite Griezmann’s departure:
“What I think is that Cholo is not going to change anything. He has brutal players, he has signed very well, but I don’t think he will change his idea of the game. Maybe in some games, yes, but in general, we’re going to continue seeing a rocky, defensive team, playing very direct … I don’t think Simeone changes overnight,” he concluded.
