Lionel Messi has confirmed he thought about leaving Barcelona, even admitting he was ready to go play with a different club. The Argentinian striker was somehow linked with a move away from Barcelona this summer and now he’s confirmed he thought about it at some point during his time with the Blaugrana.
He’s been a part of the club since 2001 and has remained loyal to the Spanish giants ever since. However, he revealed he was close to leaving Barcelona during 2013 and 2014.
Back in the day, during that period, Messi was embroiled in a tax row, which ended with the Argentina international forward having to pay a fine of £223,000, which led him to wonder whether or not he wanted to continue with Barca.
“There were moments in which I was tired for so many reasons,” Messi an interview with RAC1.
“There were times, in 2013 and 2014 when I had the problem with the Hacienda [Spanish tax authorities].
“In that time I had in my head to leave, not because I wanted to leave Barca, but because I wanted to leave Spain.
“I felt badly treated and didn’t want to be here anymore, I had the door open to many clubs.”
Fortunately, the striker opted to stay in Catalonia, where he went to win more titles with his side and is currently playing his 16th La Liga season.
Discussing his future, he said: “Today my idea and that of my family is to end here.
“Especially first because of how I am in the club, how I feel in the club, then because of the familiar, for how good we are in this city, for my children, for not changing my friendships and I don’t want it broken because I had to live it on my personal level. “
One can only imagine what would have happened if Messi decided to leave Barcelona five or six years ago. Luckily for the Blaugrana, he stayed put to become arguably the biggest legend of the club.
