Behind the combined powers of LeBron James and Anthony Davis, the Lakers are projected to be one of the leading teams in the West. After years of irrelevance, the Lakers have bounced back in a big way after a summer of star-studded signings.
But in projected Championship odds by FiveThirtyEight, the team was only given a 7% chance of making the Finals, and 5% chance of winning it all.
The Rockets, Clippers, Bucks, Sixers, Warriors, and Nuggets were all given better odds overall.
While no reasoning is given for the calculations, it seems as if there might be a number of factors impacting their chances. Being in the West, the Lakers will have to compete with several other contenders including the Warriors, Blazers, Clippers, Rockets, and Nuggets. Additionally, the age of LeBron and health concerns regarding Anthony Davis are both huge question marks entering the season.
Depth is another weak point for the Lakers. Comparatively, the team is much weaker at certain spots off the bench than other contending teams.
Can they overcome these obstacles to bring another championship to the city, or will these challenges, and the dominance of their competition, prove to be too much?
Clearly, some are inclined to think the latter.
