The Neymar saga was one of the biggest stories of the summer, with the Brazilian linked with a move away from Paris, especially to Barcelona, but he ultimately stayed put at the French capital, where he’s showing good things during the first months of competition.

A couple of months after the closure of the summer transfer window, we learn some details on how things went down for Neymar and Barcelona, including why it was difficult to complete a deal for the Brazilian winger. Barca’s talisman Lionel Messi has revealed some things that explain why this move wasn’t possible.

According to Messi, the poor relations between the Brazilian and a significant proportion of staff at Camp Nou played a major role in this saga. Speaking to Argentine radio station Metro 95.1, the 32-year-old explained (as quoted by Goal):

“It is difficult to bring him back. Firstly, because it was difficult to see him leave, secondly because of how he left.

“There are people from the club and the members who do not want him to return. If we are only talking about sport, Neymar is one of the best in the world. But, I understand all the other factors.”

Even though Neymar looks ready to push for a move to Barcelona next year, it’s unclear if the Blaugrana actually want to offer him a new deal. Besides the links with Barca, we discovered that the Brazilian was close to signing with Manchester United and even held meetings with high-profile Real Madrid players over the summer.

It looks like a potential return to the Camp Nou is unlikely for the 27-year-old right now, but we still have to wait until next summer to see what’s the next chapter of his career.
