In the next Players Ratings Series, Giannis Antetokounmpo will be rated in all of the key attributes known to an NBA Superstar. Giannis took a massive leap this past season and became one of the top 5 players in the league en route to his first MVP Award.
The Greek Freak is literally a freak of nature, who is tall and long yet plays like a point guard. Giannis is very dominant on both ends of the floor and cannot be stopped when he is on the fast break or decides to score the ball inside. His length, quickness, strength, and athleticism makes it as easy for him to score as anybody in the league.
The Bucks were the best team in the regular season last year, and Giannis was the main reason why. Here are the 13 most crucial NBA player factors that determine the reigning MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo’s final rating.
Ultimate Skill: Fast-Break
Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Hero Badge is in the aspect of his Unstoppable Fast-Break. Giannis is unstoppable attacking the basket on the break since he is long enough to touch the rim with ease. If you decide to hack him, he will finish through contact and almost always get the And-One. Not to mention, he is a perfect player to handle the ball since he can find open shooters when the defense collapses on him.
Giannis upped his scoring average tremendously this season and was one of the best scorers in the league. He seemed to figure it all out, attacking the basket with force and using his length to get easy buckets. When Giannis has a clear path to the rim, he is certain to get a bucket. In fact, he is so deadly on the inside that it offsets his lack of jump shooting.
Giannis has a very average mid-range jumper and a very poor three-point shot. Once he gets a respectable J, he will get a perfect 5 stars. But for now, his scoring will take a dip despite averaging 27 per game for the season.
Giannis is a special talent, who is unstoppable inside the paint. But he does not play like a typical big man, he is an extremely effective point forward and an excellent playmaker. He finds it incredibly easy to find the open man for good looks and is especially deadly on the break. He will often make the right play, whether that’s finishing himself of finding open shooters.
He is still improving in his aspect, and will soon be at a 5-star rating. Giannis is not selfish and simply wants to win by making guys better around him. He earns 4.5 stars for that.
Giannis is also very effective as one of the best rebounders in the league. As previously mentioned, he is a big man with a guards skill sets and athleticism. So he is able to fly high and grab rebounds at a tremendous rate. Not to mention, he is often the man leading the break after he gets the rebound.
After averaging 12.5 rebounds per game, Giannis is proven to be a monster on the boards. Even though he’s a forward, his length makes it easy to snag rebounds over taller players and he will continue to be one of the top rebounders in the league.
Giannis Antetokounmpo’s impact on basketball is near perfection since he is able to do it all at a very high level. Offensively, he is so long and athletic that he is unstoppable inside. Defensively, Giannis has all the tools to stop a player and even play help defense. His impact would be a perfect 5 if he would improve his shooting.
But the Greek Freak’s inability to hit jumpers at a consistent level lowers his overall impact score since the best teams in the league will be able to exploit this weakness as seen with Toronto last year. Giannis impacts the game in many areas, but shooting the ball is the most important area that needs improving.
Without a doubt, Giannis is a freak athlete. He has all the physical tools of a super athlete including strength, size, speed, and length. Giannis is so athletic that he is capable of reaching one end of the floor to the other with only a few dribbles. He is something that we have never seen before.
There is not much Giannis can do to improve his physical game, and even when he puts on some more muscle as he gets older, it will most likely serve to help his game as he can take more punishment on the inside.
Defensively, Giannis is a beast. Mainly due to his physical abilities, he is able to guard four positions and even the length to handle some centers. Beyond that, he is quick enough to stick to guards and will often make the play his team needs at that moment.
Giannis averaged 1.5 blocks and 1.3 steals this year, and these numbers will surely increase as his career progresses. For now, his supreme length and athleticism allow him to earn 5 stars here.
NBA IQ: 4.5/5.0
Giannis has a very high basketball i.q. due to his dominance in all aspects of the game. The two major indicators of his basketball i.q. is his playmaking and his defense. Giannis is a great passer of the ball and often makes the right play with the ball. He is constantly improving his game and becoming a better player each and every year. This is a great indicator of high i.q.
Not to mention, Giannis is always active defensively and is most often in the right place to stop offensive players. He is also continually improving in this aspect and he will soon be widely recognized as one of the best defenders in the league, it he isn’t already. 4.5 stars for Giannis here.
Giannis is still young and has plenty more chances to perform in pressure situations. He will have many more playoff battles coming, and he must live up to his increasing reputation.
As of now, Giannis has not been able to be a clutch player for his standing. His lack of shooting ability from the perimeter and from the free-throw line prevents him from taking and making the clutch shots. If he wants to be the best in the game, these areas must improve. 3.5 stars for Giannis here.
Giannis is very efficient at scoring the ball inside, getting his guys open shots, and rebounding the ball. He also does not demand the ball too much to score and shot a very high percentage last season (58%). These are all great markers of efficiency, especially considering the position he plays.
While he limits his game to the inside, his numbers are supremely impressive. He scores a lot of points in the paint, so his efficiency will be high because of it. Yet, Giannis has poor efficiency from the perimeter and the free-throw line. He cannot be trusted from the outside and struggles to make two free throws in a row. He will surely continue to add to this, but his poor shooting prevents him from getting 5 stars.
Giannis is still early on in his career and has not had enough chances to prove his worth in the Playoffs yet.
But he still dominated last year, posting averages of 25-12-5 in the playoffs. When a superstar is judged in the playoffs, his regular-season numbers need to go up. Giannis still has yet to prove this and this will count against him here.
When he has made the Playoffs, Giannis still performed well so far and he deserves a 4.0-star rating for that.
Giannis is emerging into an effective leader. So far, Giannis has led by example by improving his game each and every season. As a matter of fact, he has added a stronger aspect of his game which includes his playmaking.
Giannis continues to learn how to make guys around him better, and how to win games. What’s next for his leadership ability is to learn how to win close games more often, and how to close the deal when it matters most in the bigger games. This often comes with time and Giannis will soon be a superstar in that regard.
Giannis has captured the MVP Award, made the All NBA Team 3 times, and is a 3-Time All-Star. These achievements are impressive considering his age, and he will surely continue to add to his resume along the years.
His MVP Award is easily his biggest achievement, and he will hope to add another one this following season. When judging a player by his achievements, taking into account contemporaries is very important. When comparing Giannis to his main rivals, he is not quite there yet. Again, he is still young but his total achievements garner him 3.5 stars for now.
1 On 1 Game: 3.5/5.0
Giannis, when he has a lane to the basket, is simply unstoppable. His quickness and extreme length make it impossible to challenge him at full speed. When he is inside the paint, it is even worse. He will often just dunk over a defender and draw a foul in the meantime. He is that deadly inside.
However, against the best defenders, he is often forced to pass out due to his lack of shooting ability. Giannis still has not developed a respectable jumper where he forces defenders to close out on him. This is a massive hindrance in his one on one game and he must improve this area if he wants to be as good a one on one player as some of the NBA’s best. This number will likely improve, but he gets 3.5 stars here.
